Unfortunately, the aging process begins as soon as we are born, but at that point, it seems joyous. Let’s look at ways to keep it joyous and learn how to embrace the aging process.
Society teaches us to fight the aging process rather than embrace it.
Just look at the kind of wording that is used on cosmetics – ‘declare war on wrinkles,’ or ‘fight the signs of aging.’ These types of advertising make the idea of how to embrace the aging process almost impossible. Just remember that true beauty radiates from within.
When is it that we lose that joyous feeling when thinking about aging? And, why is it that we really only start to think about aging as another birthday looms? 21 is an exciting milestone and so is 25 (yay car rentals), but as soon as we hit 30 we start thinking about aging differently. Suddenly Botox seems like a great idea and skin creams are a must.
More realistically, your focus should be on being happy, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Building a strong sense of health and wellness will prove effective in battling the typical negative thoughts that accompany the aging process. There’s good news, though, because there are many other ways to embrace the aging process.
How To Embrace The Aging Process
Have A Skin Care Routine
You need to change your skin care routine as you get older, because the creams and routines you used throughout your 20s, 30s, and 40s won’t be as effective as you get older.
As you age, your skin dries out and loses collagen. It is important to choose products that are designed for your age group.
Products that contain plant stem cells are great for stimulating the production of collagen and the likes of hyaluronic acid will plump it back up.
Another place that we tend to neglect is your hands. Use hand cream each time you wash your hands.
If you look after yourself, you will feel good and this will boost your confidence no end.
Rest Well
Rest is important not only as you age but at every age.
Ensuring you get at least seven hours every night will prevent premature aging.
Your life is probably pretty stressful, so you need to give your body the time to relax, heal, and refresh.
Be Active
It will be far easier to embrace your age when you lean into it and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is through regular exercise and keeping fit.
Some years ago, you had children to chase around, and you were probably more active in work and play.
It’s important to maintain fitness as you age, so make the time for daily exercise.
Whether you opt for walking around the neighborhood, golfing, or yoga, do something that gets your heart beating faster every day.
Stimulate Your Brain
It’s really easy to let your brain go as you start to get older.
You don’t tend to realize how little thinking you’re doing because you’re slowing things down at work, taking on fewer responsibilities and gearing down your challenges.
This is especially true of retirees. Find activities or hobbies that will keep your mind walking a tightrope, whether it’s puzzling, learning a new language, traveling, volunteering, or playing chess in the park.
There are endless ways to keep your mind nimble.
Embrace Change
Don’t be that person that constantly refers to how things used to be.
Our society is moving fast, technology is expanding rapidly and it changes constantly. You need to be optimistic and embrace the changes if you want to put into effect how to embrace the aging process.
While it may be overwhelming the best way to handle, it is by embracing it and any other changes that life throws your way. It is in the handling of change that we find confidence and happiness.
The worst thing we can do when faced with the aging process is to hide from it. It is really important to stay optimistic as you age.
Another year means more wisdom, more passion, and more opportunities to spend time with the ones you love. Don’t be afraid of reassessing your life and making changes that will boost your happiness.
Most importantly, laugh. Surround yourself with happiness and joy and always make time to laugh heartily. Shift your focus to being stronger, wiser, and growing.
Awesome tips, especially getting updated with change and stimulating the brain. My grandpa is only 80 years old and he’s forgotten everything already, including my name and my father’s and more importantly, his wife which is sad. Meanwhile, our Prime Minister is at his prime 93 years old and he’s fit as a fiddle.
Proves that age is a number and although it slows us physically, we can still live like yesterday 😀
It is very sad when age hits us sooner than we want it too. It’s no guarantee, but if you look after your health while you are younger, you stand a better chance of growing old gracefully and staying healthy in body and in mind.
Thanks for sharing this. Yes we have to embrace aging and take care of our skin at the same time. I always hydrate myself with water and take naps whenever there’s a chance.
Exercise is quite hard but at least I have my 7-10 minutes walk and I always use the stairs rather than the elevator.
I have a question though, when I took some collagen pills, my face started to break out small pimples like 2 or 3 every week. Right now I have pimple marks. I ordered it from Japan ’cause they say its really effective. My friend who recommended it said that it’s expected. Is it true to most collagen pills?
Well done on taking care of yourself.
I have never heard of pimples being caused by using Collagen pills, and I have never taken them myself. I, however, do use creams with collagen in them and haven’t had a problem.
Maybe the pills are interfering with something else that you are taking?
Some great tips here on a worrying period of life, that we all have to go through.
My dad is now 74 years of age and he is extremely active. Like me, he runs most mornings, but he also followed me recently into mountain biking (seriously!).
He looks wonderful for his age, and I believe it is down to the active lifestyle he leads. He also swears by red wine – but I’m not going behind that one (I think it’s just his guilty pleasure every night!).
So, out of everything you’ve covered above, I would say that staying active is super-important when handling the ageing process!
Staying active is really important, but they say a glass of red wine a day is very good for you too as red wine has many anti oxidants in it.
There is nothing wrong with aging or getting older. It is the natural process so we need to embrace it. I do also agree that true beauty lies inside every human being. But it is important to keep ourselves healthy and fit as long as we live. Regular exercise, food habit, and proper resting can really create an impact on our daily life. Overall living a healthy life is very important. Thank you for the article.
Fahim you are absolutely right. Take care of your health and your body and you will thrive well into old age.
Dear Michel,
Thanks a lot for the insightful and informative article and I got helpful insights from your article.
Everyone is afraid of aging process and the time flies. When kids call me uncle instead of brother I realize I am getting old lol. We need to embrace the aging process is a new perspective and an eye-opener.
I always used creams on my face and I never focused on my neck, chest and hands, thanks a lot for sharing and going forward will implement what I learned from your article. Exercise is on my “To Do List” for a while but I am not doing it but from today I am determined to do it.
Every thing will change except change! Indeed, with every year we are getting more experience too!
May I ask…
Is that the seven hours sleep needs to be a continuous one or it includes nap as well? Please advice.
Embrace Change!
Paul
Thanks for your insight, Paul. They say that it is best to get your seven hours at night if you can as your body can rest better and deeper sleep happens when it is dark.
Nothing stopping you from a ten-minute power nap during the day though. Too much sleep during the day may make you groggy.
Hi,
Some great advice here on now to age gracefully. I’m now 33 so only recently passed the 30 landmark and have to agree at that stage looking younger immediately become of greater importance. I can’t speak for some of your older site visitors but for me getting enough rest is absolutely vital for keeping you young. One of the key factors I notice about people my age who tend to look older is that they often “burn the candles” at both ends. Some great advice here!
You are quite right Nate. Burning the candle at both ends is a definite no if you want to try and look younger for longer. Getting at least seven hours sleep a night could result in you looking bright and well rested.
I love this view on aging! While your body definitely changes, you don’t have to hate growing old. Just make sure you take aging into account while enjoying life. I love the part about embracing change. I’ve never been good at that, but it’s not because I’m pushing 40. It’s because I have anxiety and change causes my routine to get out of whack. Excellent post, thank you!
Thanks for stopping by Selenity and I hope you can overcome your anxiety and fear of change.
